Dear Proffesor Blackstone
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Qayyum and I am currently a student in Singapore Institute of Technology(SIT), and am pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Previously, I studied in Ngee Ann Polytechnic studying the same course. My interest for engineering started around my pre-teen age when I was helping my dad with household chores. One example is when I was helping my father to dismantle the fan to wash it. I was also curious on how the things around me were made and designed.
One communication strength that I have is that I enjoy listening to others speak. I enjoy listening to other people speak as I get to listen to what they are thinking. It also gives me a different perspective of the topic that we are discussing. For example, when I am working on a group project with my classmates, it is important to listen to everybody's idea so that we can make the best project.
One communication weakness that I feel I have is that sometimes when I am having a conversation with someone, I might talk too fast. This might be a problem because the person I am conversing with might not understand me and I have to repeat what I said. I tend to talk too fast when I am too excited about a topic.
The first goal I hope to achieve from this module is to be more creative and open-minded in the way I think. To be more creative in the way I speak and how I write down my reports. The second goal I want to achieve from this module is to be more confident in the way I speak. Sometimes I might not feel comfortable talking to many people.
The thing that differentiates me from other people is that I enjoy meeting new cats. I personally own a cat, but I get a different feeling when I meet a stray cat or a cat that belongs to one of my friends. This is because every cat has their own personality, whether it being a vocal cat, non-vocal cat or a lazy cat.
Yours sincerely,
Amirul Afif Qayyum

I think the paragraph about cats seems interesting, feel like a link could be made between meeting "new" cats and conversing with new people.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the paragraph about cats could be put as the 2nd paragraph for a better flow
Thank you for your comment. I will take this into consideration.
DeleteQayyum, felt good reading your letter as it gives me a very comfortable vibe. Your points regarding the different aspects of your life are well explained which gave me insight to how you build yourself through reflecting your actions. I also do agree that the point about meeting new cats can be linked to conversing with new people you meet! Like what you mentioned in your last point, there are also different personalities for every human. Some people are vocal, some are not so vocal.
ReplyDeleteHi, I find your letter to be well detail and pleasant. I might suggest one little improvement which is for your first two sentences of the second paragraph, as I think that it does not flow well and maybe you might want to take a look at it again.
ReplyDeleteDear Qayyum,
ReplyDeleteThank you for this well crafted letter. In it you provide lots of relevant information that leads us readers to having a much better understanding of who you are. I especially like learning the details on how you developed an interest in engineering by helping your dad. You also delve deeply into what your communication competencies are and that your weakness is in talking too fast--though we've never seen that in class.
Generally, your letter is well articulated. Here are a couple minor issues to resolve:
1. verb issues
-- I personally have a cat at home but meeting a stray cat or a cat owned by my friends feel different. > (subject - verb disagreement)
2. overuse of caps
-- pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. > ?
I look forward to hearing more form you this term.
Brad
